The law does not care to prevent speech merely because it sounds hateful. That is why activists – whether on campus or in the mayor’s office – want to act against disfavored speech outside the law. They cannot shut it down any other way.
For fifty years and more Americans cannot imagine what would happen to their country were they to acknowledge the truth about Kennedy’s death, and act on it.
Now imagine how their work would proceed if the FAA existed to regulate flight, where Wilbur and Orville had to have their design approved before they could build the airplane, have the plane inspected after they built it, then qualify as licensed pilots before they could fly their invention.
Each advance of knowledge and narrative counts as one more step. However imperfect our understanding of the whole story, even a small amount of accurate knowledge outweighs many false beliefs.
His key weakness appears to be that he does not realize the nature of his situation. His advisors as well seem unaware of his situation, and equally incapable of framing it or drawing useful conclusions. If his administration did have this awareness, or these analytic capabilities, it could not possibly act the way it does.
Several forms of democracy continue, but we no longer function as a constitutional republic. Secession and other radical changes recognize and ratify something that has already taken place.
