As the sanctuary movement illustrates, federal authority in immigration cases is not welcome in many places. It is certainly not welcome here in Massachusetts.
The greatest threat to our security does not come from abroad. It comes from people who wear badges, who display the name of their agency on the backs of their jackets. It comes from greedy, predatory officials who run a protection racket no one dares resist.
When you talk about use of cruelty to instill fear, the KKK and ICE have a good deal in common.
We make sure the adolescent girls are raped no more than once or maybe twice a week. That way they can recover. As for the boys, we put them in the secure housing unit only when necessary.
When you demonstrate your ability to mistreat people who come to you for help because they have no protection, you turn laws on their head. Laws no longer protect the weak from you, or from others with power. Instead, you use the law to make the weak suffer.
Immigration officials claim all the highest motives, but in fact they represent another instance of storm trooper government. They are mindless, armed and uniformed heavyweights who follow the empire’s orders.
